“Top Wired Cities” - Christian Science Monitor - April 1998. Article ranked Columbia fourth highest in percentage of residents who used the Internet at least once a month during 1997.

The 1999 issue of The Editor & Publisher Market Guide ranked Columbia as the third best metropolitan area in the United States. Criteria for the ranking included examining the Cost of Living Index, Crime Index and education levels.
